At 60, She Didn't See an Old Lady. She Saw Herself.
Somewhere along the way, women are handed this ridiculous idea that there's an expiration date on feeling sexy.
Apparently, we're supposed to reach a certain age, put away the lingerie, and politely retire from feeling like absolute smoke shows.
Ummm... EXCUSE ME?! 😂
Who made that rule?
Because I have a client who would like a word.
She celebrated her 60th birthday with a boudoir experience at House of Divulged.
Okay, technically she celebrated a year later.
But who's counting? 😉
And the best part?
She didn't walk into my studio desperately searching for confidence.
She already knew she was worthy of celebrating.
She just wanted an experience that was entirely for HER.
And honestly? I freaking LOVE that.
A Birthday Worth Celebrating (Even If It Was a Year Late)
When I asked what inspired her session, her answer was simple:
"To celebrate my 60th birthday (just a year later)"
Listen, babe.
If there's one thing adulthood has taught us, it's that life doesn't always cooperate with our plans.
Sometimes the birthday comes and goes.
The calendar fills up.
Responsibilities take over.
And before you know it, another year has disappeared.
But who says you have to celebrate yourself on an exact date?
Your birthday doesn't come with an expiration date on the fun.
And neither do you.
Whether you're turning 30, 50, 60, or you're celebrating a random Tuesday because you damn well feel like it...
I'm here for it.
She Was Already Comfortable in Her Own Skin
Here's something that makes this client's story a little different.
When I asked how she felt about her body before her boudoir session, she said:
"I’ve finally reached a point in my life where I’m comfortable in my own skin, so I went in feeling pretty good"
CAN WE GET A ROUND OF APPLAUSE?! 👏
Because I love hearing that.
So often, the conversations around boudoir photography revolve around women who are struggling to feel confident.
And those stories absolutely deserve to be told.
But what about the women who have already reached a place of acceptance?
The women who have spent years figuring out what makes them happy, what they like, and what they no longer have the patience to tolerate?
They deserve to celebrate themselves, too.
You don't need to be struggling with your confidence to have a reason to book a boudoir session.
Sometimes you can already feel pretty damn good about yourself.
And just want some gorgeous photographs to go along with it. 🔥
Confidence Doesn't Mean You Have to Be a Contortionist
Now, being comfortable in your own skin doesn't mean you suddenly develop the flexibility of a Cirque du Soleil performer.
Wouldn't that be convenient? 😂
When I asked what made her nervous about her session, she told me:
"I don’t usually feel too nervous because Tara always has a way of bringing out the best. I just wish I was a little more flexible to do some of the poses."
First of all...
RELATABLE.
Some of these poses look effortless until you're the one trying to hold them.
And then suddenly you're wondering if your lower back has filed a formal complaint.
But here's the good news.
You do not need to be flexible, experienced, or know how to pose for a boudoir session.
At my studio, I guide you through the posing and demonstrate it myself.
We work through the experience together, and you can always tell me if something feels uncomfortable or isn't working for you. There are plenty of variations we can explore that might be a better fit for your body.
The goal is to create photographs you love.
Not audition for the Olympic gymnastics team.
There's Something Pretty Wonderful About Being Pampered
One of this client's favorite parts of her sessions happens before we even start photographing.
The makeover.
"The full makeover is always a highlight. I never get the chance to have my makeup done professionally."
And I absolutely get that.
Think about how much time so many women spend taking care of everybody else.
Remembering appointments.
Managing schedules.
Making sure everybody has what they need.
Keeping seventeen different things running in the background while casually pretending we've got it all under control.
Meanwhile, when's the last time somebody told YOU to sit down, relax, and let someone else handle things for a while?
With boudoir sessions at House of Divulged, professional hair and makeup are part of the experience.
You get to settle in, enjoy a little pampering, and have somebody else do the work.
Just a little time that's yours.
And judging by this client's answer?
She's a big fan. 💋
That Moment When the Confidence Takes Over
Even when you're comfortable with yourself, being photographed can come with a few butterflies.
But this client knows something about that feeling.
Because this wasn't her first boudoir session with me.
When I asked whether there's a moment when something shifts during her sessions, she described it beautifully:
"The moment when the nerves pass and the confidence comes thru"
I love that answer.
Because confidence doesn't always have to arrive before you try something.
Sometimes it shows up while you're doing it.
You're chatting.
We're laughing.
I'm walking you through a pose.
You realize you're actually having a damn good time.
And suddenly you're a little less worried about what your hands are doing.
Which, for the record, I will STILL help you with. 😂
That's one of my favorite things about boudoir photography.
Getting to watch someone enjoy being in the moment.
Not worrying about dinner.
Not mentally answering emails.
Just being present.
And having FUN.
"Holy Smokes... Is That Me???"
Okay, now let's talk about seeing the photographs.
Because this might actually be MY favorite part.
When I asked what goes through her mind when she sees her images, she said:
"My first thought is always “Holy smokes - is that me???”"
ALWAYS.
Did you catch that?!
This woman has experienced boudoir photography before.
She knows what it's like to be photographed.
She knows I guide the posing.
She knows what to expect.
And she STILL gets that reaction when she sees herself.
I mean, COME ON. 🥹
I love that she can return to something familiar and still find excitement in the experience.
Because celebrating yourself doesn't have to be a once-in-a-lifetime event.
You can do it more than once.
In different chapters.
With different looks.
For different reasons.
Or for absolutely no reason other than wanting to have a fantastic time.
She Doesn't See an Old Lady
Now, THIS is the answer that really got me.
"I know I’m an older client, but when I look at my photos, I definitely don’t see an old lady."
And then she continued:
"I see that I, along with anyone else who has done a session, am exquisite."
EXQUISITE.
Not "pretty good for my age."
Not "still looking okay."
Not "hanging in there."
EXQUISITE.
Babe.
Can we make that the standard?! 🔥
Because there's something so wonderful about a woman looking at herself and choosing THAT word.
No apology.
No little disclaimer.
No comparing herself to the woman she was twenty years ago.
Just appreciating the woman looking back at her.
And here's what I want other women to hear.
You don't have to wait until you feel exquisite to book a boudoir session.
But if you're already at a place where you know you're pretty damn fabulous?
You are absolutely allowed to celebrate that, too.
The Greatest Gift She Could Give Herself
"I have lived my entire adult life taking care of and putting everyone else’s needs first. I do these sessions as a gift to myself."
Whew.
How many women can relate to THAT?
Because it's so easy to build an entire life around being needed.
Being the dependable one.
The one who remembers everything.
The one who shows up for everybody else.
And there's nothing wrong with loving and caring for the people in your life.
But somewhere in all of that...
You deserve to exist as your own person, too.
With your own wants.
Your own interests.
Your own little adventures.
And your own reasons to get dressed up and feel amazing.
She added:
"And let’s face it - we all need a chance to get dolled up and show a side of ourselves that wouldn’t be seen otherwise."
YES, MA'AM. 👏
I couldn't have said it better myself.
And that's one of the things I love about her story.
She isn't waiting for somebody else to give her permission.
She's deciding how she wants to celebrate herself.
And then she's doing the damn thing.
More than once.
Is 60 Too Old for Boudoir Photography?
Short answer?
HELL NO.
Longer answer?
Boudoir photography isn't reserved for women in their twenties or thirties.
And there isn't one particular age, body type, or chapter of life that makes somebody more deserving of beautiful photographs.
Maybe you're approaching a milestone birthday and want to do something memorable.
Maybe you've finally reached a point where you love your body more than you criticize it.
Maybe you're rediscovering what you enjoy after spending years prioritizing everyone else.
Or maybe you've simply decided that life is too short to miss out on the fun stuff.
All of those are valid reasons.
And if you're looking for a Kansas City-area boudoir photographer, here's what I'd encourage you to look for:
Someone whose photography you genuinely love.
Someone who will guide you through the experience.
Someone you feel comfortable asking questions.
And someone who understands that you're showing up with your own personality, boundaries, and reasons for being there.
Because your boudoir experience should feel like something you actually WANT to do.
Not something you have to prove you're brave enough, young enough, or confident enough to deserve.
"Just Do the Damn Thing."
Naturally, I had to ask what advice she'd give a woman who's been quietly following House of Divulged but hasn't booked yet.
Her response?
"Just do the damn thing. You will not regret it."
And honestly?
That might be the most perfect ending to her story.
